A short 12-mile trip by air or
ferry from Tahiti, Moorea is known for its majestic
ragged volcanic peaks that rise from the Pacific. The
pace of life is much slower here....villages dot the
waterfront road where a lazy barefoot existence prevails.
The sandy shores lead to turquoise shallow waters and
the deep blue of Opunohu Bay and Cook’s Bay.
Tahitian style accommodation offers plenty of sun and
fun activities. The island has a circumference of 37
miles that can be easily explored by car or bicycle.
There are plenty of local boutiques and shops to wander
through. But be sure to drive, by 4WD or horseback ride
to Belvedere Lookout high on a central peak where you
enjoy a breathtaking view. Here you can view waterfalls
and lush vegetation or see the vanilla and pineapple
plantations. This island is one of the best spots for
windsurfing and a mecca for luxury yachts that moor
in the deep bays. Get out to meet some of the 9,000
locals who will share their culture and traditions with
you, or disappear to a deserted motu for a romantic
picnic.
