PORTEE STATION
Just a short two-hour drive from Adelaide, Portee Station
is in Outback country, 10 minutes from the river town of Blanchetown,
within easy reach of Adelaide by car. Portee Station provides
guests with 4 1/2 star accommodation on a 20,000 hectare sheep
grazing and wool growing property. The homestead, built in
1873 on the floodplain of the River Murray, is in the wetlands,
allowing the abundant bird life that inhabit the slow flowing
stream and age old rivergums, to provide an educational experience
in a unique, tranquil, and restful setting. Portee is now
managed as a shining example of nature based tourism, joining
primary production, commercial enterprise, and the natural
environment, to sustain the features of each. Guests are encouraged
to understand this by joining the day-to-day activities of
the Station with the property managers. The development of
Portee as a tourist destination provides guests with "experience"
opportunities, combined with comfortable accommodation. The
Station demonstrates, in some part, the atmosphere of early
Australian Station life. Experience real life on an Outback
Australia sheep station with the Clark Family.
Luxurious, private suites for you to enjoy and relax, each
with its own en suite, Portee Station provides everything
you need to have a great nights rest with modern comfortable
bedding with electric blankets. Rooms serviced daily by the
House Maid. STD / ISD telephone in each room Perfect! It's
hard to believe you are staying in outback Australia with
such luxurious surroundings.
Meals are taken in the dining room, with all guests eating
at the same time, or outside on the lawns or verandah as decided
by Margaret on that day. There is a standard menu, but guests
with special dietary requirements are respected.
Local experiences include bird watching (133 species on the
property), mustering sheep, checking the water troughs, or
marking lambs. Try your hand at crutching (under the watchful
eye of both Ian and the sheep). Shearing is during August,
crutching in February, March, and July. Watch "Tom"
the sheepdog or one of his pups do the work of 10 men with
the only commands being either a whistle or a word. This is
station life at its best. Barbecue or lunch in the bush. 4
wheel drive tours into the paddock allow guests to unobtrusively
view the fauna in their natural habitat. The mallee scrub
joins to complement the river system with the numerous parrots
and small bush birds creating an ornithologists delight. There
are wombats, kangaroos and emus to be seen, at ease with their
recent arrivals, the sheep. A boat trip on the Portee Creek
is the time to view the prolific bird life, nesting in hollows,
or architecturally designed homes in trees. Leave the boat,
and walk to the wildlife lagoon and Murray River, and on the
way, study a canoe tree. Consider the ingenuity of the aborigine
in producing his water transport. Remember to take your camera
and binoculars.

area is home to kangaroos, wallabies, possums, goannas, echidnas,
koalas, platypus and many birds including the rare Cape Barren
Goose. At Cape du Couedic on the south-west tip visit a New
Zealand furseal colony which is rapidly expanding. These animals
can be observed at rest on the rocks or frolicking in the
surf under Admirals Arch - a spectacular coastal grotto. On
the headland above is Cape du Couedic Lighthouse which plays
an important role in navigation. Further down the coast explore
Remarkable Rocks, huge natural granite sculptures on the cliff
top. Lunch today is a picnic in the bush before exploring
more of the Island. Depending upon the day we might take a
walk to a secluded cove, or watch for a platypus by a quiet
pool. Return to the eastern end via Vivonne Bay, one of the
few protected bays on the south coast. |
