Sunny and sophisticated, Sydney basks in its worldwide recognition as the shining star of the southern hemisphere.  The white-sailed Sydney Opera House, caught mid-billow over the waters of Sydney Cove, and the Sydney Harbor Bridge are the pride and joy, but there’s far, far more on offer.  You’ll need days to discover the harbor, the city’s restaurants and cafes, Olympic venues, glamorous beaches, museums and art galleries, and the national parks and wildlife within the city and on its fringes.

Alice Springs is a compact city and has a population of about 30,000 people.  There are over 350,000 visitors to the city each year.  The city centre runs along the Stuart Highway, which connects Alice Springs to Adelaide and Darwin.  The main shopping area in Alice Springs is the Todd Street Mall.  The Todd River, which is almost always dry, runs through the town.  You will find a variety of shops, restaurants, cafes and fascinating Aboriginal art and craft galleries in the city centre.

Day 9:
Fly from Alice Springs to Ayres Rock, on Qantas Airways

Ayers Rock/Uluru is a red sandstone monolith, in Uluru National Park, which is owned by the Aborigines.  It’s the world's largest at 9.4km (5.6 miles) around, with smooth slopes rising to 340m (1100 feet).  For many thousands of years, this rock has been the focus for religious, cultural, territorial, and economic inter-relations among the Aboriginal peoples of the Western Desert. Caves around the base of the Rock were used by Aboriginal people for shelter and which they decorated with paintings.  Most visitors make the steep, but exhilarating, walk to the top of the Rock where the views are spectacular.  It is an arduous trek however, and the authorities close the rock to climbing on very hot or windy days.  In that event, visitors can still enjoy the fascinating base tour.

2 nights accommodation: Voyages Outback Pioneer (3 star), Voyages Desert Gardens (4 star), Voyages Sails in the Desert (5 star).

Day 10:

The Cairns Airport is located only several minutes drive north of the city center.  The city itself is where much of the accommodation is situated with international standard restaurants, boutique shopping, modern art galleries and classy nightclubs to keep visitors entertained.
