For 127 years, Newmans has been
providing quality holidays to travelers from all over
the world. From the very first tour in 1879 when the
Newman brothers purchased “the finest carriage
and horses that money could buy” in New Zealand,
Newmans has maintained unparalleled levels of quality,
value and personalized service. These uncompromising
standards still apply today, resulting in holiday memories
clients will cherish for the rest of their lives.
Brothers Tom and Harry Newman set off carrying Her
Majesty’s mail on July 1, 1879 in a yellow, green
and red coach. There were no passengers on this day,
just precious bags of mail. Many said they were foolhardy,
their journey would encounter gorges, cliffs and rivers,
but their determination to succeed is now a legend in
the history of New Zealand transportation.
In 1920, Tom’s son Jack took over and under his
direction the company expanded, moving into package
tour operations and opening offices in Australia, Japan,
Los Angeles and throughout New Zealand after World War
II.
In 1973, Newmans was taken over by the TNL Group, (now
THL) and in 1979 when Newmans celebrated its Centenary
it was recognized as the largest tourist company in
New Zealand.
In the 1990’s the McGeary family-owned APT Group
with its own long-established and proud history took
over the management of the Newmans Escorted Touring
business whilst THL remain as the managers of Newmans
independent holidays. This partnership with vision and
like-minded commitment to quality ensures the continued
growth of the company.
Newmans South Pacific Vacations in Los Angeles is now
an American-owned company that has been well-established
for almost 30 years.
